What We Do

The SoMo Fund

The World Economic Forum's Global Social Mobility Index benchmarked 82 global economies and discovered that most economies are failing to provide the conditions in which their citizens can thrive. However, increasing the level of social mobility could act as a lever to economic growth.

"SoMo" is the combination of the first 2 letters of each word in "Social Mobility". Social Mobility refers to the ability to better one's life and socio-economic status, regardless of the person's initial starting point.

The SoMo Fund works with startups that facilitate Social Mobility by advancing Social Security, Food Security and Financial Security.

Social Security

The number of physicians per one thousand people ranges from 0.2 to 2.5 in Southeast Asia. That number is even lower in the rural areas.

Improving healthcare strengthens human capital, which in turn, strengthens social security and economic progress.

The SoMo Fund supports practitioners and regulators across the spectrum of the healthcare industry to increase the accessibility of healthcare and update legacy medical procedures with better medical devices and outcomes.

Food Security

The population of Southeast Asia is 2x the population of the United States. That is a lot of mouths to feed.

In fact, about 12% of the combined GDP (and 29% of jobs) of the Southeast Asian countries is accounted for by the agriculture, forestry, fishing and food processing industries (US$422+ Billion).

The SoMo Fund curates innovative startups with climate-friendly solutions for food production, processing and distribution to reduce hunger, increase nutrition and improve our environment.

Financial Security

The adoption of technologies transforming education and the future of work has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but unpredictable internet connectivity still hinders the access to information and opportunities in the emerging markets.

The SoMo Fund knows that solutions for these markets have to be built differently from the current ones, as the emergence of new vocations, business models and fintech applications will shape and be shaped by the way people learn, work and live.

What We Do

Surfacing Intelligence

Early stage or late stage? Rely on the power law or increase the quality at the start of the funnel? Do B2B or B2C businesses yield better returns? The playbook for the emerging markets is different from Silicon Valley's because understanding investors, funds and startups in the region requires the application of culturally-contextualized knowledge.

Right Time, Right Place

Level Up Your Portfolio

Emerging managers and funds below US$1B are 3x more likely to outperform funds larger than US$1B. According to Pitchbook, 27.8% of first-time funds and over 14.5% of non-first-time-funds smaller than US$1B (versus only 4.3% of VC funds greater than US$1B) achieved returns greater than 25% IRR.

Over 90% of funds in the emerging markets are below US$1B and majority are in the emerging managers category (operating Funds I, II and III). The potential for outperformance and diversification benefits are worthy considerations for global investment portfolios.

The Journey Is Long

It's Good To Have Friends

If a VC fund typically operates for 10 years and you’re there from start to end, that's at least a decade of your life you’re committing to it. 10 years is a big commitment, but with foresight from peer-learning, you’ll have the chance to make the most of your time in VC and beyond - exercising discipline in the investment process, working with time and resource limitations, handling ongoing operational, compliance and financial aspects of running a fund, etc.

There are many ways to hone your skills, but being part of a strong investor community can be your edge for fundraising, due diligence, value-creation and exits.

Speaking From Experience

From The Same Side Of The Table

There is no perfect startup with a smooth-sailing journey, so the lessons that you’ve learnt over the years can serve as a proxy crystal ball for other founders. Have you raised at least 2 rounds of funding? How did you do it? Are there battle stories about team management, market expansion, mental health and other challenges you have experienced first-hand or heard about? How were these challenges responded to?

While the paths that others have taken might not be the ones you take, contributions to the collective knowledge base helps to shape the future.

Looking Ahead

Food For Thought

As the aging population trend continues, economies will be stronger with women (than without).
As technology closes distances, inclusive societies will be stronger (than divisive ones).
As people live longer, those who can think longer term will be more prepared (than those who don't).

It's never too late to start.
Let's evolve together.
